Varicose veins is a condition in which the veins in the legs and feet appear swollen and twisted. It is caused by the weakening of the vein walls and valves, leading to bulges that can appear blue or purple. These bulges are visible from the outside and may be prominent. While varicose veins typically do not cause severe harm, they can lead to complications such as blood clots. Symptoms may include pain, swelling, itching, skin discoloration, and a feeling of heaviness or sluggishness in the legs, along with the blue or purple appearance of the veins.
Several factors can contribute to the development of varicose veins, including hormonal changes, overweight, obesity, prolonged periods of standing or sitting, aging, and tobacco use. Genetics can also play a role in their formation. Treatment options include laser therapy, injection therapy (sclerotherapy), and, in some cases, vein surgery.
